                Research area: Biofouling of Polymers

Biofouling is the settlement and accumulation of living organisms on man-made physical structures placed in an aquatic or marine environment. The formation of microbial 'biofilms' is first step in the establishment of a marine fouling community that includes sessile (stationary) macroscopic organisms like macro algae, barnacles, bivalves, bryozoans, sea squirts, etc. The biofouling issue is more than aesthetic, as the biological fouling of submerged materials is of great economic importance. Hence, the objective of the work is focused on this area of marine fouling and the strategy to develop an effective antifoulant which is an environmentally compatible option to control fouling. The aim of my research includes,

  • Testing the Performance of different Polymers in Marine Environment
  • Prevention of biofilm formation by polymer modification
  • Evaluation of effective antifouling (quorum sensing inhibitors) coating on different polymers, in different conditions using Flow cell reactor
