Plant cell bioprocessing can be a sustainable green alternative to natural plant extraction and chemical synthesis of complex plant metabolites of industrial importance including pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals, etc. Sustainable production of large scale plant cell biomass in bioreactors offers many advantages over natural plant extraction like consistent and uniform product yield, free from adulteration, lesser downstream processing/cost for extraction of product. However, despite various advantages, there are not many Industrial plant cell bioprocesses across India. Key bottlenecks associated have been low product yield and scale-up limitations. Our aim is to apply biochemical/bioprocess engineering principles to develop sustainable bioprocesses for the commercial production of high-value low-volume phytochemicals. This includes rationally integrating genetic and bioprocess engineering principles for maximum product yield and productivity in plant cell/tissue based bioprocesses.
