Dr. Madhulika Dixit
Madhulika Dixit received her PhD from IIT Bombay in molecular biology by studying transcriptional regulation of extracellular protease gene epr in Bacillus subtilis. She then continued her interest in molecular and cellular biology to understand cardiovascular complications at the Department of Physiology, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, USA. There she was involved in characterizing the effect of chronic hyperinsulinemia on responses of smooth muscle cells towards anti-atherogenic agent nitric oxide. She then extended her interest in understanding endothelial behavior in response to fluid shear stress at the Institute of Cardiovascular Physiology, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
She has been at IIT Madras since 2007. Her research interests are to understand molecular triggers, which initiate vascular dysfunction in insulin resistance and diabetes. In order to get a holistic picture her group subscribes to following approaches:
- In vitro primary cell cultures of aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC), human umbilical vein derived endothelial cells (HUVECs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs).
- Cell and molecular biology techniques and use of RNA interference and viral vectors for pathway characterizations.
- Screening of clinical samples for scoring changes in gene expression through micro-array analysis.
- Validation of in vitro data through in vivo animal experiments.
